Low Thyroid Q & A

What is the thyroid gland?

Your thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland that’s part of your endocrine system. Your thyroid is located in the base of your neck. It creates all of the hormones your body needs to regulate and control your metabolism.

There are several thyroid disorders: hyperthyroidism in which your thyroid makes too much hormone and thyroid nodules, which are either benign or cancerous growths in or on your thyroid gland.

Edgewater Medical Clinic treats a range of thyroid disorders.

What is low thyroid?

Low thyroid, or hypothyroidism, is a condition in which your thyroid is underactive or doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone to balance your body and metabolism properly. With low thyroid, you might experience certain symptoms, such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Dry skin
  • Muscle aching and weakness
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Thinning hair
  • Sensitivity to cold

Low thyroid symptoms might be nonspecific and generalized, so Dr. Bobby Jacobs usually checks your blood levels to confirm your diagnosis. The symptoms of low thyroid can be especially detrimental to your general health, wellness, and quality of life. If you’re dealing with symptoms of low thyroid, visit Edgewater Medical Clinic for an evaluation and treatment.

What causes low thyroid?

Low thyroid is commonly caused by an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s disease or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. With Hashimoto’s disease, your immune system attacks your thyroid and impairs normal thyroid functioning and the production of thyroid hormones.

Other causes of low thyroid hormones include the surgical removal of your thyroid, radiation treatments, thyroid cancer, and side effects from some medications. It isn’t always clear what causes low thyroid, and multiple factors might play a role.

How is low thyroid treated?

As part of your initial consultation, Dr. Jacobs collects information regarding your health history and symptoms and takes blood samples. Thyroid blood work usually involves measuring the levels of thyroid hormones circulating in your blood, including thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), T3, and T4.

After you’re diagnosed with low thyroid, Dr. Jacobs might suggest:

  • Thyroid hormone replacement
  • Regular TSH, T3, and T4 testing
  • Nutritional counseling, stress management, and other healthy lifestyle changes
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • Weight-loss support
  • An annual physical to monitor your health

Edgewater Medical Clinic provides effective services for thyroid conditions, such as blood testing and monitoring, a wide selection of different thyroid compounds, and highly customized treatment plans.
